  • Psychotic depression – When the depression is accompanied by psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions.
  • Seasonal affective disorder – Depression that follows a seasonal pattern .
  • Postpartum depression – Otherwise known as postpartum blues, postpartum depression only occurs among women who has just given birth. Typically, the depression lasts anywhere from one to 3 days after giving birth.

Symptoms of Depression

While experts agree that the most distinguishing characteristic of depression is the inability of the individual to enjoy the thingsthat they previously enjoyed. It is not the only symptom that may point to the possibility of depression. Other symptoms include the following:

  • Feelings of sadness, emptiness, or despair that simply don’t go away;
  • Irritability, pessimism, and restlessness;
  • Feelings of guilt, helplessness, and a general feeling of lack of worth;
  • Low energy and fatigue;
  • Inability to sleep as well as other problems related to sleep patterns;
  • Memory problems and lack of concentration;
  • Inability to make decisions;
  • Suicidal ideation;
  • Changes in weight;
  • Changes in eating patterns; and
  • Pain or discomfort that cannot be explained nor treated by known therapeutic modalities.

Causes of Depression

As well as natural disasters, loss of a loved one, jealousy, social isolation, and even problems in social relationships can. Other causes can be due to certain medications like benzodiazepines, beta-adrenergic blockers, corticosteroids, and certain contraceptives.

Depression can also result from certain organic diseases such as Addison’s disease, Lyme disease, Cushing’s syndrome, and Parkinson’s disease. It can also include multiple sclerosis, hypothyroidism, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and chronic pain. Certain substances can also lead to depression. These can include alcohol, heroin, prescription opioid analgesics, benzodiazepines, cocaine, crystal methamphetamines, inhalants, and hallucinogens.
